You may have noticed we have been loving Spanish food recently. We fell in love with Spanish food when on holiday in Menorca with the girls when they were younger. We always try local food when on holiday and so have the girls. And we had the most amazing Paella in a seafood food restaurant in Ciutadella. So when we came home I tried to perfect a recipe that my family would love. And Easy Seafood Paella was the result.Love Paella and need an Easy Seafood Paella recipe - no snails I promise Click To Tweet
What are the Origins of Paella?
Paella was originally a farm workers dish, cooked by the workers over a wood fire for the lunchtime meal. It was made with rice, plus whatever was to hand around the rice fields and countryside. So tomatoes, onions, and snails !?!Maybe a few beans added for flavour and texture. There was no seafood in at all, rabbit or duck might also have been added. For special occasions, chicken plus a touch of saffron. Paella was also traditionally eaten straight from the pan in which it was cooked with each person using their own wooden spoon.
Little by little, as ‘Valencian rice’ became more widely available, paella recipes were adapted with new variations appearing. Valencia, being on the coast, seafood crept into the recipes. Now paella is the generic name of 200 or so distinctive rice dishes from the Valencia region let alone other parts of Spain and the rest of the world. Including my Easy Seafood Paella, by the way, you can throw in rabbit, chicken, and snails if you wish I won’t stop you.
